Bouguereau, Elizabeth Jane Gardner 1837 - 1922Tag:oil painting  |  Update Date:2008/12/17 11:57:31  |  Browse:56

One of the first American women artists who dared to invade the all male establishment of the French art academies. According to her obituary in the New York Times, she "literally opened Paris ateliers to the women of the world." She also became the first American woman to exhibit, and later to win a medal, at the Paris Salon.

Elizabeth Jane Gardner (October 4, 1837-January 28, 1922) was an American figure painter, born in Exeter, New Hampshire.Gardner graduated in 1856 from Lasell Seminary in Auburndale, Mass. There she received the proper young lady’s training-drawing from outline cards and dabbling in watercolors. At Lasell she became friends with her teacher Imogene Robinson, a bold spirit who went off to study in Dusseldorf and seems to have had a strong influence on her pupil. While coping old masters in Boston, trying to supplement her "polite" art education, Gardner became convinced that her drawing was inadequate and that she, too, needed thorough European training. In 1864 she sailed for Paris with Robinson.

Carriera, Rosalba 1675 - 1757Tag:oil painting  |  Update Date:2008/12/17 11:08:28  |  Browse:67

Rosalba Carriera (October 7, 1675 – April 15, 1757) was a Venetian Rococo painter. In her younger years, she specialized in portrait miniatures. She later became known for her pastel work, a medium appealing to Rococo styles for its soft edges and flattering surfaces.

Born in Venice, Rosalba Carriera was a prominent and greatly-admired portrait artist of the Italian Rococo. Her family was from the lower-middle-class in Venice, and as a child, she began her artistic career by making lace-patterns for her mother, who was engaged in that trade. Others claim that she received initial instruction in oil technique from the undistinguished Venetian painter Giuseppe Diamantini[1]

Carracci, Annibale 1560 - 1609Tag:oil painting  |  Update Date:2008/12/17 10:22:11  |  Browse:54

Annibale Carracci (November 3, 1560 - July 15, 1609) was an Italian Baroque painter.

Annibale Carracci was born in Bologna, and in all likelihood first apprenticed within his family. In 1582, Annibale, his brother Agostino, and his cousin Ludovico Carracci opened a painter’s studio, called by some initially as the Academy of Desiderosi (Desirous of fame and learning) or subsequently of the Incamminati (progressives; literally "of those opening a new way"). While the Carraccis laid emphasis on the typically Florentine linear draftsmanship, as exemplified by Raphael and Andrea del Sarto, their style also derived from Venetian painters an attention to the glimmering colors and mistier edge of objects. This eclecticism would define artists of the Baroque Emilian or Bolognese School.

Blum, Robert Frederick 1857 - 1903Tag:oil painting  |  Update Date:2008/12/17 10:17:59  |  Browse:53

Robert Frederick Blum, 1857-1903
Robert Frederick Blum was an active and successful artist, versatile in a number of media and highly regarded as a pastelist. His vibrant and atmospheric work, which incorporated many of impressionism’s techniques, helped pave the way in America for acceptance of impressionism.

The Cincinnati in which Blum was born in 1857 was an artistic center, but he received his major inspiration when, like many other American artists of the time, he visited the Centennial Exhibition in 1876 in Philadelphia. There  he was very impressed with works by artists of the Romano-Spanish School. He became such an important disciple of the well respected Giovanni Boldini and Mariano Fortuny that he became known as "Blumtuny."

Carlevarijs was born in Udine, but worked mostly in Venice. His veduta of Venice are among the earliest Baroque depictions of the city. He was influenced by the Dutch painter active in Rome, Caspar van Wittel (often called Vanvitelli). The painters Canaletto and Antonio Visentini are said to have been highly influenced by or pupils of his. Johan Richter did work with him. Also called Luca Casanobrio or Luca di Ca Zenobri, for his patronage by the latter family.

Canaletto [Giovanni Antonio Canal] 1697 - 1768Tag:oil painting  |  Update Date:2008/12/16 16:41:36  |  Browse:60

Giovanni Antonio Canal (Venice, Republic of Venice, October 28, 1697 – April 19, 1768, Venice),[1] better known as Canaletto, was a Venetian artist famous for his landscapes, or vedute, of Venice. He was also an important printmaker in etching.

He was born in Venice on October 28, 1697, as the son of the painter Bernardo Canal, hence his mononym Canaletto ("little Canal"), and Artemisia Barbieri. His nephew and pupil Bernardo Bellotto was also an accomplished landscape painter, with a similar painting style, and sometimes used the name "Canaletto" to advance his own career, particularly in countries—Germany and Poland—where his uncle was not active.

Bronzino, Agnolo [Agnolo di Cosimo] 1503 - 1572Tag:oil painting  |  Update Date:2008/12/16 14:11:31  |  Browse:83

Agnolo di Cosimo (November 17, 1503 – November 23, 1572), usually known as Il Bronzino, or Agnolo Bronzino (mistaken attempts also have been made in the past to assert his name was Agnolo Tori and even Angelo (Agnolo) Allori), was an Italian Mannerist painter from Florence. The origin of his nickname, Bronzino is unknown, but could derive from his dark complexion, or from that he gave many of his portrait subjects. It has been claimed by some that he had dark skin as a symptom of Addison’s disease, a condition which affects the adrenal glands and often causes excessive pigmentation of the skin.
